NET-Fuels Overview

NETFuels is a 4-year project funded by the European Commission's Horizon Europe programme to develop and validate integrated electro-chemical and thermal processes to produce sustainable fuels and energy from low-grade waste biomass. Moreover, applying the process biochar to soil will achieve certified negative greenhouse gases emissions. The project will demonstrate these processes at pilot scale (Technology Readiness Level 5).

WRG Europe is the lead dissemination and communication partner in collaboration with REACH Consultancy who is leading exploitation activities.

Project 6-month review

From 18-19 April, the team met at Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany to discuss progress over the first 6 months of the project. A representative of each the project organisations gave an overview of their work to date. This included updates on project management, data management, oxy-combustion modelling, bio-electrical-methanisation design, soil enrichment, exploitation planning, and dissemination and outreach.

On the second day, the team were given a tour of the Fraunhofer facilities. This included visiting the waste conversion facility built as part of the ToSynFuel project.

Project Kick-Off Meeting

The NET-Fuels project formally kicked-off when the consortium met at the University of Bologna in Ravenna, Italy on 14-15 December 2022. It was an opportunity for all 7 project beneficiaries to meet each other as well as the Coordinator (University of Bologna) and the management team responsible for overseeing the project. Each partner gave an overview of their activities and responsibilities for the next 6-months and the project as a whole.

It was also an opportunity to see the impressive facilities at the University of Bologna relating to sustainable energy and circular economies.
